MUAB June 2020 Walk: Braeside Park under Covid-19 restrictions.
Date: Saturday, 20 June 2020. 10am, Circle ready to walk.
Meeting Place: ‘The RED GUM Picnic Area’, Governor Road, Keysborough.
Extras: Bring sanitiser, camera, lunch and a cover for seating and table.
Braeside Park is a 310-hectare green-space native plant reserve protecting significant indigenous, environmental and cultural heritage. The park’s Red Gum, grassy woodlands, heathland and the wetlands provide a series of diverse micro-habitats. Twelve kilometres of trails provide opportunities for walking, running and cycling. A stroll can be taken through the community garden or around the muralled art walls or tree stump art carvings. In 1930 Harry Telford stabled Phar Lap here for several weeks before his departure for the United States of America.
The Long Walk: 10km loop, easy, flat walk with a lunch stop. 4 hours.

We will walk north along the blue, pink, and orange trails in the attached map and continue along on a perimeter loop of the park behind the Wetlands till we are back at the Red Gum parking area. We will stop by water features, sculptures, a community garden and have lunch on a grassy flat where we can expect to see waterbirds and some pelicans and black swans. If it remains wet, we will be challenged by three ankle-deep water crossings so do wear water-proof boots or be prepared to go bare foot, and poles will help here. A highway extension threatens the peace to be found in this reserve so now’s the time to go. I have maps for those wanting a longer walk who later may see some of the internal paths.
The Short Walk: 5 to 6 km loop, easy with a lunch stop. 3 hours.

Joan regularly visits this rural space near her home and knows it very well. Shorter walkers going with Joan are in for a treat to hear about the special places and what have been seen before. The walk will be on dry tracks and follow some of the blue, pink and orange paths and return by part of the Wetlands Circuit.
