Royal Tennis Club

The pouring rain and cold temperatures did nothing to deter 16 members from visiting the
Royal Tennis Club in Richmond, a visit facilitated and hosted by Duncan, one of the longest
serving members of the club in Melbourne.
Duncan introduced us to the history and facilities of the Club, one of only five clubs in
Australia. Facilities for the ancient game include two courts and a swimming pool.
Fortunately, we were able to watch the game played by four expert players. Club members
were fascinated to learn of the unique rules and were especially delighted to observe the
handmade stitching of the special tennis ball.
Following the visit, coffee was had at Trumble café at MCG and a further walk into the
Botanical Gardens nearby was postponed as the rain had become torrential
