Point Nepean National Park walk

Thirteen happy walkers enjoyed exploring Point Nepean National Park from Gunners Cottage to the Point. Along the way we found historic rifle range facilities, Pearce Barracks and Upper Barracks as well as the infrastructure and tunnels of Fort Nepean.

The views to Port Phillip Bay and the Southern Ocean were spectacular. After climbing Cheviot Hill, we felt the intrepid actions and significant loss of life as we passed by the Memorial to Harold Holt, ex-Prime Minister who lost his life in the waves of the ocean.

Lunch at the Fort was suitably sheltered from the wind with plenty of things to explore.

The sandy Coles track returned us to Observatory Point and the beach. Loads of driftwood by the old historic cattle quarantine jetty inspired the artists amongst us. Here we could clearly view the gap of ‘The Rip’ and generally enjoy the calm views over water.
